HOW TO ENSURE A SUCCESSFUL RELOCATION AS A LEADER

A Starter Guide for Leaders Moving to a New Country

You got an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to relocate to a new country, lead a new team, and expose your family to a new culture. What an exciting adventure! And with that - comes its challenges (but you knew that!). As a Leadership & Career Coach specializing in helping leaders and their families navigate international relocations, I understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with such a significant career and life move. I'm highlighting below a few of the key factors to considers as you relocate, along with impactful strategies to ensure you and your family's success.

1. Gain a Deep Understanding of Your New Cultural Context Before You Go

As a leader, I can't emphasize enough the importance of not only understanding the cultural context of your new home, but being an expert in it - from understanding how to give effective cross-cultural feedback to your new team, to knowing how to deliver a powerful presentation that is well understood and received. I've seen far too many times, leaders moving to a new home downplay the importance of understanding their new cultural landscape, assuming "what's worked for me as a leader here will work for me there." I wish I could say it was that simple! It takes more than just learning a few key words in the local language; it takes a deep understanding of cultural values, unspoken cues, body language, social norms like acceptable small talk, hierarchal structures, etc. Yes - the list is long! Dive deep into the language and culture of your new home, and you'll earn the respect, trust and buy-in from your new team. Where to start? I recommend this great cross-cultural communication book, The Culture Map by Erin Meyer. Note: cross-cultural communication and management is one of my specialties, and we work on this together!

2. Proactively Plan How Your Family Will Thrive

Is your partner and/or kids following your along for the adventure? This might seem obvious, but think proactively about what all the members of your family need to be successful. A great international school for the kids? A re-imagined career for your spouse? A community of expats? Once you've got a list of all of your families needs, start tackling it one-by-one. There are tons of expat community groups on Facebook and Whatsapp that are an incredible resource for a soft landing in your new home, and are incredibly supportive (start by searching "[new home] expat group" on Facebook and you're likely to find a list of groups! If your spouse has to pivot careers to something they can do in your new home, some factors to think through is if they prefer working remotely or locally in your new community. Shameless plug: I do genuinely recommend working with a coach (hi!) to support this life & career transition, ensuring your spouse ends up in a career and community they are happy with.

3. Ramp Up Quickly with Local Events

Integrating into a new professional environment requires thoughtful planning and proactive engagement. My personal favorite tip: Upon landing in your new home, attend local industry events, join professional associations, and actively seek opportunities to connect with leaders in your industry. This will help you ramp up quickly, impress your new colleagues, and quickly become an expert in your new professional context.

4. Utilize the Support Available to You

You do not have to do this alone. I repeat: You do not have to do this alone! Likely, your company has legal and HR resources to support your transition. These can include relocation packages, housing assistance, cultural training, and mentoring programs. They might even sponsor Relocation Coaching to support your transition! Make sure you're not leaving any resource available to you on the table, and don't be afraid to ask if you need something you don't have. Your company wants you to be successful!
