HOW TO THRIVE AS AN EXPAT
Tips for a fulfilling life abroad
Moving to a new country is both exciting and challenging. While the adventure of living in a foreign land can be exhilarating, many expats struggle to find their footing once the initial excitement wears off. Thriving as an expat requires more than just adjusting to a new environment—it’s about building a fulfilling life abroad that resonates with your personal and professional goals. As a certified expat coach, I’ve helped countless individuals navigate this journey. Here are some essential tips to help you thrive as an expat in your new country.

1. Get a clear vision that excites you for your life abroad

Before diving into the practicalities of expat life, take time to create a clear and exciting vision for your life abroad. What's your DREAM life abroad look like? What will your social circle and community look like? Will you be a part of the expat community, integrated into the local community, or a mixture of the two? What fulfilling career will you build for yourself abroad? What hobbies and passions will you pursue? What will you day-to-day life look like? Ask yourself the tough questions, and get super duper clear on what's most important to you in building a thriving, fulfilling life as an expat.

2. Build a Fulfilling Career Abroad

Ok, easier said than done, I know (that's where I come in!). I'm going to share a myth I here way too often: "you have to put your career on the back-burner to move abroad". My friends, that is FALSE. You can build as much a fulfilling career abroad as you can in your home country, there are just different considerations. First and foremost, identify what it is what you want to be doing (again, if you don't know, we can work on that together). Then, figure out "the how" - do you want to be working remote as a digital nomad, or locally? Will you start your own business or get hired? I know it can be overwhelming, and the question "BUT WHERE DO I START?" might come to mind. If that's the case, I got you, friend. Let's chat.

3. Create a Supportive Community

Again - easier said than done, I know! I've had to build my community from scratch way more times than I would like to admit (5 in the past 10 years? but who's counting). Feeling isolated is one of the most common issues expats face. Building a strong support system is crucial to thriving abroad. The best way to build a community that is aligned with you is to get involved! Go to events that interest you, join a club (ex: hiking club, biking club, etc.), take classes (dance classes, language classes, etc). and put yourself out there on Whatsapp and Facebook groups.
I know it can be uncomfortable at first, but pushing through the discomfort will reward you with a community that feels like home.

4. Embrace the Local Culture

I'm very passionate about this one - you've moved abroad to experience a new way of life. Make sure to not fall into the pit-hole of the expat bubble! Learn the local language, attend local events, make local friends, ask locals questions, try local food, and follow in the footsteps of what the locals are doing. I can't even begin to express how truly transformative it is to immerse yourself in the culture of where you're living. I actually made an Instagram reel on this! Enjoy ;)

5. Establish Routines for Success

Routines are essential for creating stability in a new environment. Establishing daily and weekly routines can help you stay productive, maintain your well-being, and ease the transition into your new life. Whether it’s a morning routine that sets a positive tone for the day, or continuing to cook dinners that you used to cook at home, routines make for a smooth transition that lead to a productive, happy, healthy life in your new home. Personally, I totally geek out on routine building for productivity - if this is something that you could work on, I've got you! Who are you gonna call? Expat Coach Casie (sorry, bad Ghostbusters reference).
